4 — Evidence discipline
Before you serve anything
Distinguish observed fact, test result, expert opinion, inference and allegation. Preserve originals, dates, coordinates, chain of custody and laboratory certificates.
- 01State the precise location, coordinates, dates and times, and the affected receptors (property, water point, stream, woodland, species site, mine feature).
- 02Attach only relevant evidence, with an indexed exhibit list.
- 03Preserve original photograph and video metadata and unedited source files.
- 04Keep water and soil sample chain-of-custody, sampling method, laboratory accreditation and limits of detection.
- 05Separate historic baseline information from current observations.
- 06Do not describe causation as established unless supported by competent expert evidence.
- 07Ask each statutory body for a reference number, lead officer or team, jurisdiction decision and next action.
- 08Maintain a master contact log with date sent, acknowledgement, reference number, response deadline and escalation date.
